At the Deputies' Passage of the 2026 Guizhou Provincial Two Sessions, Pan Cheng, a deputy to the Guizhou Provincial People's Congress and technical manager of Guizhou Qianyaoyuan Zhongxin Pharmaceutical Investment & Development Co., Ltd., spoke about the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, which officially opened to traffic on September 28, 2025. As a native of Guanling, Pan said he had personally witnessed how this landmark project transformed what had long been a natural barrier at the doorstep of local residents into a vital transportation link.

For hundreds of thousands of people in Guanling, the change brought by the bridge has been nothing short of transformative. In the past, travel between Guanling and the opposite side of the canyon required a detour of nearly two hours along winding mountain roads due to the canyon, which plunges hundreds of meters deep. With the completion of the bridge, that journey has been reduced to just two minutes, bringing an end to generations of hardship once defined by geographic isolation. "People who live in the mountains understand better than anyone that to prosper, you must first build roads," Pan said. "For people in the mountains, real opportunity only comes when roads are built—once you can walk out, better lives can follow. This bridge is not only a world-class engineering marvel—it represents a tangible sense of well-being that local people can truly feel."

Located in the core area of China's karst landscape, Guizhou Province is characterized by rugged terrain, with 92.5 percent of its land consisting of mountains and hills. It was once the only province in China without extensive plains. Under such conditions, mega-bridge projects like the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge are far from engineering showpieces. Instead, they serve as critical links that stitch together fractured geography and connect remote regions with modern development. Rising 625 meters above the canyon floor, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge sets a new world record for bridge deck height. It stands as a representative example of Guizhou's extensive bridge network—more than 30,000 bridges built or under construction across the province—each designed to overcome formidable natural obstacles, reshape regional connectivity, and turn once-impassable mountains and valleys into thoroughfares of growth.

The bridge has also unleashed a powerful ripple effect. During its first National Day holiday after opening, Guanling received over 300,000 tourist visits, with hotels and homestays fully booked. Many migrant workers have returned home to start businesses, opening guesthouses and restaurants. Through a "Bridge-centered tourism integration 3.0" model, combining sightseeing, sports experiences and tourism services, the bridge has become a new engine for regional development. It now links major attractions such as Huangguoshu Waterfall and Wanfenglin Scenic Area, forming a dynamic golden tourism loop.

Today, this bridge—embodying Chinese ingenuity—has become a vivid window for the world to observe China’s infrastructure upgrading. It is the first in the world to embed an intelligent sensing system within ultra-long main cables for real-time structural monitoring, and it features BeiDou-based intelligent cable cranes operating under program-controlled precision. These integrated innovations, developed through China's own engineering practices, have resulted in 21 authorized patents, some of which have been incorporated into national standards. Through each span across a canyon, the bridge delivers a clear message to the world: China's infrastructure development is not only capable of overcoming geographic challenges with cutting-edge engineering, but is also committed to a people-centered promise—by improving connectivity, a single bridge can help stimulate local industries and raise living standards in the surrounding communities.
